Jets playoffs chances: Is New York out of the playoff race after loss vs. Seahawks in Week 17? AFC East qualifying explained

New York Jets v Seattle Seahawks
With the loss to the Seahawks, the Jets saw their playoff chances end.

The New York Jets knew they had to keep winning in order to make an unlikely playoff berth, but against the Seattle Seahawks, Robert Saleh's team laid an egg. The 23-6 loss drops the New York team to 7-9 and makes a playoff berth incredibly unlikely.

With the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins both at 8-8, the Jets will need some things to go their way if they want to punch their playoff ticket.

With so many off-field distractions and on-field missteps, mainly being quarterback Zach Wilson and his poor play, the fact that the Jets are even in consideration for a postseason spot is incredible.

Not considered to be anywhere near a playoff team at the start of the season, New York's defense has shown it is more than capable of mixing with the best. Unfortunately, the offense hasn't been as good.

In fact, it's been horrible at times and New York's playoff chances have all but gone because of it.

What does New York need to do to get into the playoffs? In short, nothing as they have been eliminated. With the loss to the Seahawks, New York missed the chance to make its Week 18 game against the Dolphins a must-win game.

Given that New York lost to Miami and added that the New England Patriots had beaten them twice this year, the New York team, yet again, will be watching the playoffs from the sofa.

Given that not many have had New York winning seven games this year, let alone making a playoff push, it is still a good season nonetheless. Although today, it will not feel like it.

Having been in the playoff chase right up until the second to last game of the year is quite different to what New York fans have been subjected to over the past few years.

There are signs of progress, but New York needs to get its quarterback situation sorted out.

The season ends with no playoff chances, but with a tough defense that is of playoff caliber, 2023 is looking good for Saleh's men to make yet another playoff push.
