Joe Mixon had the ultimate burn, quite literally, for Rex Ryan after the Texans won their Wild Card round matchup against the Chargers to move to the Divisional round. He lit a cigar and said,

"We smoking on that Rex Ryan pack"

The former NFL head coach had said that Los Angeles would be a threat in the next round of the postseason as he likened the clash against Houston as effectively a bye given the home team's recent form to end the regular season.

Rex Ryan commented before the game,

“I never realized the Chargers got a Bye—that they qualified for a Bye. But they did because they’re playing Houston!”

Instead, the Texans' defense came up tough and intercepted Justin Herbert four times to win the match 32-12. It was a brutal loss for the Chargers and a season where they thought they had made tangible progress now finishes with more questions than answers.

Joe Mixon not the only Texans players to raise Rex Ryan's Chargers' bye comments after win

Unless there was some secret liaison between DeMeco Ryans and Rex Ryan that we do not know about, we are assuming that the former NFL head coach did not make these comments to act as a motivational tool for the Texans.

However, that is what exactly happened. Joe Mixon mentioned that while smoking a cigar. It was not only him, though, as defensive star Will Anderson Jr. mentioned those comments in his postgame press conference, saying,

"It doesn't matter what anyone says. Outside noise."

He then went on to say that the camaraderie the Texans have is reportedly the best he has ever experienced.

The Texans will now be recharged for the Divisional Round, where they are expected to face a stiffer test. If the other AFC teams do what they did today and win their home games, then they will have to travel to Kansas City to face the Chiefs after their actual bye week.

The Chargers, meanwhile, will be thinking if they underestimated Houston the same way as Rex Ryan did. Their mental makeup certainly would not have been helped by the wildfires currently burning in Southern California right now. They did not look up to the game, especially Justin Herbert. His mistakes put them behind constantly and it ultimately became too big a hole for Los Angeles to dig out of. As he sits and home and watches, Joe Mixon and his teammates move on.
