Josh Allen-Patrick Mahomes rivalry draws bold Tom Brady-Peyton Manning comparison ahead of AFC championship

With Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen set to face off in the playoffs for the fourth time in their career, it inevitably leads to comparisons with Tom Brady and Peyton Manning’s rivalry. And according to ‘Breakfast Ball’ anchor Danny Parkins, if Allen fails to beat Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs again, he will have lost this rivalry.

Parkins compares Mahomes-Allen to Brady-Manning

In the comparison with Brady-Manning, Parkins brought up that the narrative around the Brady-Manning rivalry was that it was one-sided.

“We talk about this (rivalry) like it is a Manning-Brady situation, and the narrative of Manning and Brady was, well, Brady got the best of them. Brady was better. Brady was the guy who delivered in the postseason.”

“Peyton actually won head-to-head more. Brady started 2-0 against him. And one of those was in Denver when Peyton was great. One of them was in Denver when he wasn't.”

Despite the general perception that Brady got the better of Manning, Manning is 3-2 against Brady in the playoffs. Part of the reason for that perception is also what is plaguing the current Bills quarterback. From the time he was drafted in 1998 to his first Super Bowl in 2006, Manning was one of, if not the best, quarterbacks in the game. However, he had little playoff success and for two consecutive seasons in 2003 and 2004, was eliminated by Brady and the New England Patriots.

The comparisons are uncanny. Like Manning, Allen is considered one of the best quarterbacks of this era. And like Manning, he won MVP without postseason success and did not even get to the Super Bowl. Manning managed to finally beat Brady in year seven in the AFC Championship game and win his first Super Bowl. Allen must do the same if he hopes to turn the tide in this rivalry.

Parkins cautions that this could be Josh Allen's last chance at Patrick Mahomes

The Chiefs and Bills have faced off three times in the playoffs since the two quarterbacks came into the league, and Mahomes has won all three games. It is why Parkins warms that this could be the last time the Bills quarterback has to break his wretched playoff losing streak against Mahomes

"For Josh Allen, there's no guarantee that he will ever get another shot at Patrick Mahomes, like, it feels like we're going to get this for the next decade."
"We hope we get it. Brady and Manning defined a decade and a half of football, and they played each other five whole times in the postseason. These guys have already played, this is the fourth so it's very possible that this is Allen's last shot to beat Mahomes head-to-head."

Parkins also talked about how well the Bills offense is playing, making this showdown even more important.

“They (the Bills) are playing really well. They beat them (The Chiefs) this year. People seem to believe that there are problems with the Chiefs. I can show you what the Bills offense is doing going into this game and you could make a realistic argument that the Bills offense is significantly better than the Chiefs offense in this spot.”

Manning eventually managed to break his Super Bowl shutout, winning twice with two different teams. With Mahomes standing in his way once again, Allen will have to overcome his biggest rival if he wants to win his first Super Bowl this season.
