The New York Jets reportedly looked into Arthur Smith over the offseason. The former head coach could have come in to coordinate the offense alongside Nathaniel Hackett, who some reports say the Jets have little faith in right now.

Ultimately, Smith passed on the opportunity in part because his role wasn't clearly defined. It would have been a big step down from head coach to unnamed offensive assistant, so he opted to go elsewhere.

ProFootballTalk reported on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the Jets looked into this. This is part of a multitude of efforts to improve the offense this offseason, and there has been a lot of work done to try and make sure Hackett, the former Denver Broncos head coach, can do well. This has Jets fans saying that the franchise should just cut ties with the coach, instead of trying to prop him up.

"Perhaps Sean Payton wasn’t off in his assessment of Hackett," another said.
"Hackett was eventually stripped of authority in Denver, too. Before he was officially fired, he kind of wandered the halls semi-aimlessly for a few weeks," one added.
"Even at 40, Rodgers is still an elite QB. Amazing talent and IQ.. as a QB. He should NOT be running the team like a GM or HC. Sure, his inputs are valid, but there's absolutely no football reason to keep the worst OC in football running the offense," another stated.
"What a horrible organization," another said.

Fans are clearly a bit tired of the Nathaniel Hackett show with the New York Jets.

Arthur Smith passed on Jets for Steelers OC job

Essentially, the New York Jets wanted Arthur Smith to come in and oversee Nathaniel Hackett, who would still be the offensive coordinator. It was a job that likely would have been created for this scenario, but Smith wasn't interested.

ProFootballTalk reported that Smith was always interested in the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive coordinator job, so once that was on the table, he accepted. He was never interested in being whatever it was the Jets had in mind.

Smith will instead work with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields as the Steelers look to move on from a disappointing few seasons with Matt Canada as OC and Kenny Pickett under center. Pittsburgh has a well-documented history of success in the regular season under Mike Tomlin, but that hasn't translated into postseason success for a long time.

With no playoff wins since beating the Miami Dolphins in January 2017, some quarters of the fanbase are growing tired of the standard being a winning season. It remains to be seen if Arthur Smith can help change that.
