Patrick and Brittany Mahomes have officially placed a bid on another professional sports franchise. The news was released on Wednesday afternoon that they are part of a possible ownership group that placed a bid to bring a new WNBA franchise to Kansas City.

The Mahomes have full support from Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, who took to X and shared his excitement. He said that Kansas City "can't wait" to have the opportunity to have a WNBA basketball team.

"KC is proud to be part of the W. Can’t wait!" Lucas wrote on X.

If the bid is selected, a Kansas City franchise would be the 16th in the WNBA. It's also part of the surge in interest in expanding the professional women's basketball league. Earlier this year, the WNBA announced expansion teams in Golden State (San Francisco), Portland and Toronto, Canada, with the teams playing in 2025 and 2026.

Mahomes, while speaking to the press, revealed that getting a WNBA team to the city was a no-brainer.

Brittany and Patrick Mahomes met with WNBA officials to discuss expansion team

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is already a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals, Formula One's Alpine Racing Team, Sporting KC and the Kansas City Current, a team co-owned by his wife Brittany Mahomes. However, he could soon add "WNBA owner" to his list of professional sports investments.

ESPN's NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday that the Mahomes', as well as Kansas City Current co-owners Angie and Chris Long, met with WNBA officials this week. Schefter also reported that the Current's ownership group is in contention to secure the 16th WNBA franchise.

Brittany Mahomes, along with Angie and Chris Long, were instrumental in bringing the Current of the NWSL to Kansas City in December 2020. The team was relocated from Utah and was renamed when it found a new home.

In March, CPKC Stadium was opened as the first and only stadium ever built specifically for a women's professional soccer team. The success and development of the Kansas City Current could help Patrick Mahomes' group as bidders for a new WNBA franchise.

The WNBA has set its goal of adding a 16th team for the 2028 season. Other cities that may have an interest in bringing a WNBA franchise include Nashville, Miami, Denver and Philadelphia.
