Dan Campbell gave a major update to Detroit Lions fans (and opponents) regarding David Montgomery, one of their best offensive players, on Tuesday. The veteran running back missed the last three games of the team's regular season but could return after the playoffs' first week.

Lions insider Tim Twentyman shared Campbell's words saying that he expects Montgomery to be ready to play in the divisional round (Jan. 18 or 19).

After initial concerns regarding his availability for the rest of the 2024 NFL season, David Montgomery was hopeful about returning to the field after seeking different options for his MCL injury. He went down against the Buffalo Bills in Week 15, sounding the alarms within the NFC North organization.

Following several visits to multiple medical experts, he was given an optimistic diagnosis that would allow him to return at some point in the playoffs. Otherwise, he would have undergone a season-ending injury in a potentially historic season for the Lions.

The Lions finished the regular season on a strong note, clinching the NFC No. 1 seed and the NFC North title with a 31-9 win over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Jahmyr Gibbs put on a show against their divisional rivals, but it was clear that having David Montgomery on the field would give the Lions a boost in a potential Super Bowl run.

As the No. 1 seed in the NFC, the Lions will have a bye week to rest and be ready to start their Super Bowl quest. This will give Montgomery more time to get ready and diminish the chances of a setback.

David Montgomery never ruled out the option of playing again this season

After getting injured in the 48-42 loss to the Bills on Dec. 15, David Montgomery was considered out for the season, but the Lions never placed him on injured reserve. He was spotted at a charity event in Detroit in December when he gave a surprising response when asked whether he would play again this season.

"I hope so."

Montgomery and the team sought three options to see what could be done to extend his playing time, and it seems like the last one is about to pay off.

In 14 games, David Montgomery racked up 775 rushing yards, 341 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, forming a terrific duo with Gibbs to help Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Co. make the Lions' offense the No. 1 in the league.
