On Thursday, the 7-6 Los Angeles Rams made the short trip up north to Santa Clara to take on the 6-7 San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium in a must-win NFC West divisional battle for both teams.

Neither could afford a defeat as they would have lost more ground on the Seattle Seahawks, who lead the division with an 8-5 record. Both rosters came into the game on the back of massive wins on Sunday.

Matthew Stafford and the Rams outlasted Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills and beat them 44-42 in a historic offensive shootout at SoFi Stadium. On the flip side, Brock Purdy and the 49ers stomped the Chicago Bears 38-17 and ended their three-game losing streak.

Given how well the offenses fared just four days ago, the game on Thursday night was expected to be another high-scoring affair. It was billed to be a duel between Stafford and Purdy, and it turned out to be exactly that, but not in the manner that most expected.

Matthew Stafford's stats vs. the 49ers on TNF

Here's how Matthew Stafford fared tonight in the Rams' narrow 12-6 win over the 49ers:

  • Completions:16
  • Pass attempts: 27
  • Passing yards: 160
  • Passing TDs: 0
  • Interceptions: 0
  • Rush attempts: 4
  • Rushing yards: 18
  • Rushing TDs: 0

The game was the offensive shootout that many expected it to be. On the contrary, it was a defensive slugfest as the inclement weather severely affected the ability of both offenses to move the ball downfield.

It boiled down to which quarterback made fewer mistakes on the field, and Stafford's experience proved to be the difference between the two signal-callers. The 36-year-old attempted only 27 passes, the third-fewest he has thrown in a game this season. He completed 16 for 160 yards and set up four field goals for kicker Joshua Karty, three from less than 30 yards out.

It wasn't a pretty performance, but it got the job done for the Rams, who improved to 8-6 and are only half a game behind the Seahawks, whom they will host in Week 18 at SoFi Stadium in what is shaping up to be a winner-takes-all duel for the NFC West division title.
