And then there was one. The Dallas Cowboys officially announced the hire of Brian Schottenheimer on Friday night, January 24, making him the 10th head coach in the franchise's history.
A number of big names were linked with the Cowboys in their search for a new head coach, including Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, New England Patriots legend Bill Belichick and Seattle Seahawks icon Pete Carroll. Instead, Cowboys GM Jerry Jones chose to name their resident offensive coordinator as their new head coach, which means only the New Orleans Saints have a head coaching vacancy to fill.
Schottenheimer's hire was met with a collective groan from Cowboys fans on social media but star pass rusher Micah Parsons' brother Terrence Parsons Jr. asked fans to have a little faith in their new head coach.
Replying to a tweet that said Schottenheimer has as good a shot as Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson to be a success as a first-time head coach, Parsons Jr. wrote:

Exploring new Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer's background
Brian Schottenheimer's roots run deep in Dallas. He is the son of the late, great Marty Schottenheimer, the legendary former coach who also mentored Mike McCarthy along with a host of current and former coaches around the NFL.
Brian Schottenheimer joined the Cowboys in 2022, initially as a coaching analyst. When McCarthy moved on from Kellen Moore, he named Schottenheimer as his offensive coordinator in 2023.
Ironically, both Schottenheimer and Moore interviewed to be the Cowboys' next head coach. However, Moore could only interview virtually since the Philadelphia Eagles are prepping for the NFC Championship Game.
Schottenheimer's hire also follows the same trope as Jerry Jones' previous eight hires. He will now follow in the footsteps of Dave Campo and Jason Garrett as coaches on the Cowboys staff who were promoted to the big job.
The only bone of contention is that he was not calling plays as an offensive coordinator under Mike McCarthy. This brings into question what exactly Schottenheimer will bring to the table that is expected to surpass Mike McCarthy's achievements.
The former Cowboys head coach was the brain behind three straight 12-win seasons but failed to make it count when it works in the playoffs.
