Micah Parsons opened up about the possibility of the Cowboys trading him in the 2025 NFL season after their win against the Panthers in Week 15. The defender is due a new contract that is expected to pay him the best value in the market for his position. Given his importance to the Dallas defense, one would expect Jerry Jones to want to pay him what he wants.

However, the NFL has a salary cap and that complicates matters. The Cowboys have already given the largest contract in the history of the league to quarterback Dak Prescott. They followed that up with a mammoth contract for wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who is now one of the highest-paid players in his position.

Given how this season has gone for Dallas, they also need to rebuild for next year. They will have a chance to build through the draft but they also might need some veteran free agents with proven capability if they are looking for an immediate turnaround. That is what they missed this year, most notably by failing to bring Derrick Henry when they had the chance.

Therefore, there might not be enough money in the cap to strike a deal with Micah Parsons. Jerry Jones might decide that he needs to bring in more reinforcements than investing in a single player. In that case, the defender has said that he would completely understand the business side of it. He noted,

“I understand how that business side goes. There are no hard feelings in this business, whether I’m here or anywhere else. Obviously, I’ve stated that I want to be here. But at the end of the day, I understand the business side.”

Micah Parsons has shown his value for the Cowboys in 2024

Micah Parsons has been relentless this season despite featuring in just 11 matches. He added two more sacks today in the Cowboys' win over the Panthers in Week 15. He did that while dealing with DeMarvion Overshown being ruled out after his injury last week against the Bengals.

It brings Micah Parsons' total up to 8.5 sacks for the year. That is a phenomenal return for a defense that has struggled all year. The 365.3 yards per game they allow is among the worst in the league. Losing him will be a huge blow. But since it also points to a need for a wholesale turnover for the defensive unit in 2025, one can understand if they choose to let their star defender go and bring in some other veterans in the the positions they need to fill.
