Mike Florio claims untradable Jets star could be Deion Sanders 2.0

The New York Jets have shocked their way to a 5-2 record, just a half game behind the pre-season Super Bowl favorite Buffalo Bills. They've become a legitimate contender just one year after finishing 4-13, last in the AFC East.

A big reason they've played so well is because of their first-round pick (one of three that they had last season), Sauce Gardner. The former third-overall pick has dominated in his first season through seven games.

In his PFT Draft video, ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio discussed players that no team would ever trade away, and Gardner's name came up for the Jets.

Florio took it a step further and compared him to an NFL Hall of Famer:

"I'm going to throw Sauce Gardner out there because I don't think, right now I mean, you're just scratching the surface on a guy who may be a Deion Sanders. Who knows who knows what he's going to be? Why would I trade that away?"

First-round picks don't always hit, but Florio believes New York made an incredible selection last year:

"The whole idea of using those draft picks, their lottery tickets, and once you scratch off a winner, you keep it. Well, we think this is a winner and I'm not. No, no, no, no, no. I'm going to keep scratching because this guy, I think, is special."

Gardner and the Jets will look to continue their run of dominance this week against the New England Patriots.

How good has the Jets' Sauce Gardner been?

The name of the game for cornerbacks is often interceptions. Great cornerbacks make a lot of interceptions. However, many cornerbacks get to the point that they're so good that quarterbacks won't even look to their side of the field.

Not to say that Gardner is that dominant yet, but that could be a reason he has just one interception to his name despite playing so well. Quarterbacks are hesitant to test the Jets star, even just seven games into his NFL career.

He leads the league in pass breakups, too, with 12, so he's making plays even if they're not all interceptions.

He's been so good that he's currently the overwhelming favorite to take home the Defensive Rookie of the Year award:

  • Gardner +200
  • Tariq Woolen +350
  • Aidan Hutchinson +1000
  • Travon Walker +1000
  • Kavon Thibodeaux +1200

Right now, only the Seattle Seahawks' Tariq Woolen is in Gardner's airspace.
