Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin joined the Pat McAfee show on Thursday to discuss starting Russell Wilson over Justin Fields. The Steelers are one of the best teams in the NFL this season, despite entering the season having more questions than answers after disappointing performances from Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph in 2023.

They landed Wilson and Fields via trade, lining up for an entertaining season. Fields had a terrific 3-0 start to the season and despite his ups and downs, he posted a great game right before being benched by Tomlin for Wilson.

"I get the benefit of watching him operate every day, not only in terms of his throwing talents and throwing the football, but just the, you know, unofficial things or the intangible qualities that he brings to the role," Tomlin said of Wilson.
"You know, he's got over a decade of experience, man, he has a way with his teammates that's inspiring, informational. He brings people together. He brings the best out in people."

Russell Wilson, Justin Fields have shined under Mike Tomlin

Since making his season debut against the New York Jets on October 20, Russell Wilson has guided the Steelers to a 6-1 record. He has thrown for 1,784 yards, 12 touchdowns and three interceptions. Wilson completed 15 of 26 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns in his most recent game against the Cleveland Browns.

As for Fields, he's only thrown a pass since getting benched. Before that, he threw for 1,106 yards, five passing touchdowns and one interception. Moreover, he has carried the ball 61 times for 281 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.

Mike Tomlin still favors Wilson, but there's no doubt he has a more than capable backup waiting for another chance on the sideline.

The Steelers will face the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, followed by the Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, and Cincinnati Bengals in an attempt to end the season on a high note.
