After a disastrous 4-13 season, the New England Patriots fired rookie head coach Jerod Mayo and brought in franchise icon Mike Vrabel to lead the team as of 2025. The former Coach of the Year winner has been tasked with helping the team ascend back to Super Bowl contention following a dismal four-year run where they only made the playoffs once.

One of Vrabel's key responsibilities is rebuilding the offense, which has been one of the worst in the league for each of the last two campaigns. The Patriots have a potential franchise cornerstone in quarterback Drake Maye, who had a promising rookie campaign. However, the offensive line and the receiving core need signficant improvement.

The Patriots have $125 million in cap space, the most in the league by nearly $30 million, allowing them to spend generously to surround Maye with talent. They can even trade for elite-level stars, with NFL analyst Alan Goldsher backing them to make a move for Chicago Bears' D.J. Moore.

Goldsher believes the Patriots could offer tight end Hunter Henry and a seventh-round pick for Moore and a second-round pick, which would be enough to convince the Bears to offload Moore's $110 million contract.

With wide receivers Rome Odunze and Keenan Allen expected to make significant strides under new head coach Ben Johnson, and Chicago likely to draft a wide receiver or two, swapping Moore for Henry, who has two years left on his three-year, $27 million deal, could be too tempting to pass up.

D.J. Moore stats: Could WR be the deep threat the Patriots are looking for?

During the 2024 season, the Patriots recorded the joint-fewest 20+ yard plays with 34 and the joint-fewest 40+ yard plays with three. They need a deep threat who can consistently deliver big plays, and D.J. Moore fits that role perfectly.

Last season, Moore had 11 plays of 20+ yards and one over 40 yards. He finished the year with 98 catches for 988 receiving yards and six touchdowns in an offense that averaged just 181.5 passing yards per game, the second-lowest in the league.

Moore is a high-caliber wide receiver, and his $110 million deal reflects his value. The Patriots have the cap space and assets to acquire the 27-year-old star. It remains to be seen if Mike Vrabel will push the front office to make a move.
