The Atlanta Falcons have reportedly acquired quarterback Taylor Heinicke on a two-year deal worth up to $20 million in free agency.
Heinicke has been in the NFL for seven seasons, with most of his playing time coming with the Washington Commanders.
In 2021, he was Washington's starting quarterback and finished with a 7-8 record while throwing 20 touchdowns, 15 interceptions and 3,419 yards.

This past season, he was initially the team's backup but earned the starting role and started nine games, going 5-3-1. He threw for 1,869 yards, 12 touchdowns and six interceptions.
He is the second quarterback that the Commanders have lost this off-season after they released Carson Wentz. The only quarterback on their roster is Sam Howell.
NFL fans were in disbelief when news broke of Heinicke getting a two-year, $20 million deal from the Falcons. Many questioned the Falcons' thought process.
Taylor Heinicke's contract details explored
As mentioned before, the Falcons have signed Heinicke to a two-year deal worth up to $20 million. The incentives are likely based on how many games he starts and how he performs.
With this contract, Heinicke has become one of the highest-paid backup quarterbacks in the NFL.
Heinicke signed a two-year, $4.75 million contract extension in February 2021 with the Commanders. In his seven seasons, he's earned a total of $7.5 million.
The Falcons, meanwhile, remain committed to second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder. They've already made it clear that he will be their starter heading into the 2023 season. But if Ridder plays poorly, then he could be benched for Heinicke.
