NFL fans go in on Tony Dungy for endorsing transphobic myth

Equipped with notifications and fast internet, it is difficult to get anything past NFL fans. In a now-deleted tweet, Tony Dungy, a former NFL coach turned analyst, mentioned an already dissed transphobic myth involving litter boxes. Although Dungy deleted the tweet, it was already saved and shared on social media.

Dungy's tweet was in response to a Daily Wire article, which spoke about adding menstrual products in boys' school bathrooms.

"Not all students who menstruate are female," the quote read.

Dungy's reply involved a myth that has been proven false. Many users were upset with the statement, calling him out for being unaware. Furthermore, some fans were unsurprised over the comment, expecting nothing from the 67-year-old analyst.

"That's nothing. Some school districts are putting litter boxes in the school bathrooms for the students who identify as cats," Dungy wrote. "Very important to address every student's needs".

Here are the reactions from people on Twitter:

A few users mentioned that they couldn't believe Dungy believed what was written, and couldn't even conduct a simple search before tweeting something. Others added that his tweets were giving them more entertainment than his actual work.

Certain fans were embarrassed for Dungy, wondering what made him believe myths like this.

This is not the first time Tony Dungy is under fire for some offhanded comments

A few fans mentioned Tony Dungy's comments on Michael Sam, an openly gay player.

While speaking to the Tampa Tribune in 2014, Dungy mentioned that he would not like to select Sam:

“I wouldn’t have taken him,’’ Dungy said. “Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it. It’s not going to be totally smooth . . . things will happen.’’

Dungy went on to clarify his comments, adding that he thinks Sam deserves a chance to play in the NFL. He explained that he was asked about letting Sam play, and not about his sexual orientation.

"I was not asked whether I would have a problem having Michael Sam on my team. I would not".

Tony Dungy's late son James was even mentioned, whose death was reported to be suicide. Some fans recalled how there were rumors about him coming out to Dungy before committing suicide.

That being said, Dungy is yet to speak on his deleted tweet.
