Aaron Glenn, the new head coach of the New York Jets, succeeds Robert Saleh. Both had a defensive background but no prior head coaching experience.
This means the daunting task of climbing to the top of the AFC East needs to be done by someone who has never been the head man on the sideline. Speaking on Thursday's episode of "Pro Football Talk," NFL analyst Mike Florio argues that owner Woody Johnson presents another challenge to the position.
"The challenge for the coach and the GM when you have an owner who likes to be involved is to manage up," Florio said [00:01:59]. "Is to find a way to get that person who is meddling, inclined to meddle, tempted to rely upon Madden ratings when it's time to figure out who to draft, who to sign, who to whatever. Get that person on board with what you're trying to do."
"Manage up. Basically, navigate that difficult personality, get them to think they're making the decision that you're trying to get them to make. That's the challenge. Don't just let them meddle. Engineer and direct their inclination to meddle," he added. [00:02:45][46.6] PFT

According to Bloomberg, Johnson is worth $8.83 billion, so it will fall to Aaron Glenn to steer the ownership correctly without making it obvious, which could be a fast track to losing Johnson's trust.
Exploring the first big decision of Aaron Glenn's tenure
Aaron Glenn will have plenty of decisions to kickstart his tenure with the New York Jets. Of course, there are the basics like choosing where to live and how to transport his possessions from Detroit to New York or whether he would want to keep a domicile in Detroit or one in New York.
However, important organizational decisions exist, such as which coordinators he should hire. Among his initial decisions is recommending whether to move on from Aaron Rodgers. Glenn most likely won't have the final say as a rookie head coach, but his recommendation could steer Woody Johnson and the general manager into their decision.
On one hand, keeping Rodgers for the final year of his contract would allow some time to transition in Glenn's second year after he settles in. That would mean accepting that the former Green Bay Packers quarterback will get one last shot in 2025.
The choice is a big, possibly franchise-turning decision, and Glenn will be one of the biggest voices to determine Rodgers' future.
