NFL analyst Brett Kollman thinks the Dolphins should draft Quinn Ewers to provide a suitable backup for Tua Tagovailoa. The Texans Longhorns quarterback declared for the 2025 NFL Draft and Kollman thinks he has all the tangibles that Mike McDaniel wants in his quarterbacks.

The analyst made the point that Tua Tagovailoa has struggled with injuries throughout his career. The only time the Dolphins quarterback has played all games in a season was in 2023, which was bookended by two concussion-interrupted years in 2022 and 2024.

Therefore, Brett Kollman thinks that Quinn Ewers would be the perfect insurance. The Texas star has 68 touchdowns in his career and more than 9,000 passing yards. The NFL analyst wrote on X/Twitter,

"There is not a more Mike McDaniel-ish quarterback in this draft than Quinn Ewers IMO... Would make sense for them as a backup for Tua in case he gets hurt again."

Tua Tagovailoa's previous comments underscore need for an alternative

Tua Tagovailoa is the confirmed starter for the Dolphins in the next season barring any unforeseen circumstances. However, exploring a backup for him might not be the worst idea because he himself wondered before the 2023 season if he should hang it up.

"I considered it [retirement] for a time, having sat down with my family, having sat down with my wife and having those kind of conversations. But it would be really hard for me to walk away from this game with how old I am... always dreamed of playing as long as I could to where my son knew exactly what he was watching, that he's watching his dad. It's my health, it's my body, and I feel like this is what's best for me and my family."

It must be noted that he returned and played with distinction. He did the same after again entering concussion protocol this season. Therefore, there is no indication that he plans to stop playing even if he goes through a similar injury but one could have said the same about Andrew Luck too before he retired. The constant battles made the former Colts quarterback change his mind and that is always a possibility.

Seen from that perspective, one can understand why Brett Kollman is suggesting looking at Quinn Ewers. His passing statistics certainly seem to indicate a good fit for the Mike McDaniel system. Even if Tua Tagovailoa does not call it a day, having the Texas rookie on the bench might be a good idea given how much Miami's backup quarterbacks struggled in 2024.
