NFL analyst's prediction that Jerod Mayo could be fired comes true

Jerod Mayo had been the heir apparent to Bill Belichick, but the succession plan had gone down in flames. Mayo was fired on Sunday following the New England Patriots' Week 18 win over the Buffalo Bills. The news was a shock to some, but some more than others.

On a special Saturday edition podcast of "Good Morning Football," one day before Mayo's dismissal, NFL analyst Peter Schrager claimed another AFC East team could end up head coach-less by the end of the Week 18 slate.

"Jerod Mayo got absolutely embarrassed on national TV [last week]," Schrager said. "He's playing for his job in a lot of ways. You can't lose [like] 40 to nothing in that game [last week]. So I find it fascinating."

Mayo's exit leaves the team scrambling to keep up with close to half a dozen other franchises looking to find their leader of the future. One former Patriots name now has an opportunity.

Bill Belichick's path to the Patriots at the turn of the century is a story known by many. The Patriots' most accomplished head coach had his first head coaching gig with the Cleveland Browns from 1991 until 1995. Then, after three years with the New York Jets as a coordinator, he joined the New England Patriots, leaving the Jets at the altar after accepting the role of Jets head coach

Mike Vrabel, meanwhile, just wrapped up a consultant job with the Browns. He then went to interview for the New York Jets position. If Vrabel ends up with the team, it would be an eerily similar set of events.

Of course, this could blow up if the coach ends up taking a job elsewhere instead.
