Their game against the Texans was the Chargers and Justin Herbert's chance to throw down a gauntlet to the other teams and announce their Super Bowl aspirations. Los Angeles came to this matchup with an 11-6 record compared to their hosts, who finished 10-7 in the regular season with C.J. Stroud struggling.
The Chargers were part of a division that sees three playoff teams in the mix, whereas the Texans' AFC South only had them with a winning record. A statement victory on the road would have announced that Los Angeles is a team to be feared. They had a stingy defense, an elite quarterback, and multiple offensive weapons coupled with a strong offensive line.
Instead, Justin Herbert was primarily responsible for squandering the opportunity. He had thrown four interceptions for the Chargers even before they reached the final two-minute warning, which handed the initiative and the points to the Texans, who were only too glad to take.
Fans flamed the quarterback for his performance on X/Twitter and here are some of the comments.

Some were a bit kinder with their remarks but nobody could come out and support the Chargers' quarterback's performance. Here are some more responses from the social media platform.
"Worst game by Herbert ever SMH" - said one.
"Can’t really blame them coming out flat. They have a lot going on in their personal lives, with the fires." - rationalized another talking about the horrific wildfires in California that has affected many in Los Angeles.
"That's too many times" - lamented a third.
Justin Herbert's unexpectedly bad performance for Chargers cements Texans' progress
Justin Herbert's performance was uncharacteristic, to say the least. He had three interceptions all season and ended up with four in this game. That means he threw more picks in one match than he did over the course of 18 weeks before that.
The last time the Chargers were in the playoffs, Justin Herbert also lost after a wild comeback by Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars. Jacksonville erased a 27-point lead to triumph 31-30 and the Los Angeles quarterback would have seen his counterpart secure the win by throwing the ball without hesitation despite four interceptions. He only had one touchdown in that game.
Perhaps, that is why the Chargers quarterback decided to be more adventurous based on his previous experience in the postseason. However, the result stayed the same as they lost to an AFC South team yet again and went out in the first round beyond the regular season. The Texans marched on to the Divisional Round as Justin Herbert's season finished in a crushing disappointment again.
