"So much d**kriding when he's barely beating Trace McSorley" - NFL fans fume as Tom Brady and the Buccaneers survive and beat the Cardinals on SNF

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Arizona Cardinals
Tom Brady of Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Arizona Cardinals

Football is a simple game. Teams play each other for four quarters and, in the end, Tom Brady always wins. Or so it seems. On Christmas Day, he pulled off another come-from-behind win against the Arizona Cardinals, which left them within one win from clinching the NFC South. They still have a losing 7-8 record and it almost seems unfair that Brady and the Buccaneers are in line to make the playoffs with such a record.

It also seems unfair to say that this victory should grace the resume of Tom Brady amongst his vintage comeback wins. He was poor today. He had one touchdown and two interceptions. This was his third straight game with multiple interceptions. He was facing an offense led by Trace McSorley. Yet, he had to go into overtime to get the win.

The sum total was what sent NFL fans into a meltdown over the perceived injustice of it all. This was not a win because of Brady, rather it was inspite of him. Calling him the GOAT because of achieving this comeback win seemed pithy. Or that is how the fans see it.

Tom Brady's stats this season show how lucky he is

Tom Brady is one win away from making the playoffs again. He has been a consummate professional over all these years. He has often been the reason why teams have become better than they were without him. But that has not been the story this season.

The Buccaneers, as mentioned before, have a losing record and only because of the poor NFC South are they still in with a chance of winning the division. To put it into perspective, Aaron Rodgers has the same 7-8 record as Brady and yet is only in a Wild Card hunt looking in from the outside.

Tom Brady has crossed 100 in passer rating only twice this entire season. He has thrown an interception in each of his last four games. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have scored 17.6 points per game, the fifth-worst in the NFL. The New York Jets, who have used four quarterbacks as their starters, have a higher points per game than them.

Today's game seemed to reinforce that notion even more. The Buccaneers won because of their kicker and defense and not because of Brady. However, this has become a theme of late this season and only seems to burnish his legend as the stats columns get padded without the context needed to understand them.
