The Buffalo Bills narrowly avoided handing the Kansas City Chiefs a Christmas present on Sunday. They railled back from a 14-point deficit to beat the New England Patriots 24-21, improved to 12-3 and kept the race for the top seed in the AFC alive. The 14-1 Chiefs now have to win one of their last two games to earn a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the playoffs.
The Bills' first-half display against their division rivals, who were 3-11 entering the game, was astonishingly underwhelming. They gave up a touchdown on the Patriots' first two drives and had only 11 yards of offense by the time they were down 14-0 early in the second quarter.
During his media availability on Monday, when Bills coach Sean McDermott was asked about the team's first-half display, he almost talked himself into trouble as he tried to think of an analogy to use:
"(I was) about to use an airplane or flying analogy, but I'll stay away from that."

McDermott refrained from using an airplane analogy due to his history of using the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers as a talking point during team meetings. Fans on social media quickly caught on to why he stopped himself short and poked fun at him for it.
"He'sot an itch like a m**h addict," one said.
Some fans claimed that McDermott is eventually going to use it again and cause a stir.
"They gonna put buddy on the no-fly list soon," @benashun quipped.
"Proof that McDermott does know how to adjust," @SignorCelery joked.
"What is his obsession with planes and crashing?" @DMVSportsCurse asked.
"Ain’t no way he did this and gets away with it," @quicKsenseTTV remarked.
Sean McDermott's 9/11 comments
In 2023, Go Long published a story detailing the issues with Sean McDermott's coaching style after the Bills' 6-6 start to the season. One of the anecdotes was about a team meeting in 2019 where he asked players to think about how the terrorists who hijacked the planes on 9/11 planned and communicated effectively to carry out the attacks on the World Trade Center.
McDermott confirmed the validity of the report and apologized. During a press conference, he said:
“As I mentioned to the team then that I regretted and apologized for me not going a good enough job of communicating my point, I’m going to do the same with the team today. So if there’s anyone new, they understand how important that is to me and my family because it’s an important event, a horrific event in our history.”
He has steered clear of the controversy since but almost brought it up again.
