NFL fans left shocked by Baker Mayfield's fall from grace as video of Panthers QB playing defense at practice goes viral

Baker Mayfield has endured a rough few months

Baker Mayfield once had it all. Drafted as the first overall pick back in 2018, the quarterback was viewed by many as the Cleveland Browns' savior. To the former Heisman Winner's credit, he looked the part as well. Guiding his side to their first-ever playoff win in over 15 years, the platform was set for the quarterback to build his legacy in Cleveland.

Fast forward to 2022 and the quarterback can now be spotted running practice drills as a Carolina Panthers D-lineman. In a viral clip, Mayfield was spotted putting in the work with his teammates on the other side of the field.

Many have noted this to be the perfect depiction of the quarterback's fall from grace. As injuries piled up, so did the interceptions and soon enough, Baker was shipped off to the Panthers to make way for Deshaun Watson.

Now backup to P.J. Walker, some NFL fans were left speculating about what could have been and how the QB's career is all but over.

Another group of NFL fans, though, seemed to believe that this was nothing but the quarterback being a solid teamplayer. An attribute many agree he possesses.

Baker Mayfield unfazed by demotion, hopeful of extending Panthers stay

Baker Mayfield may have been relegated to the role of backup. However, the quarterback from Oklahoma isn't letting it get in the way of daily operations. Instead, during a recent press conference, he said that he was still looking forward to extending his stay at Carolina:

"I care about winning right now. We'll see what happens. This is a great place. I would love to be here, but a lot of that stuff is out of my control. So I handle what I can, control what I can and just stay in the moment."

Since suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 6, the quarterback has played second fiddle to P.J. Walker. Now healthy and ready to go again, Mayfield will likely have to wait his turn to get another sniff at becoming the starting QB again.

While lining up in practice as an edge rusher shows his dedication towards winning, the quarterback will need to find a way to bounce back fast if he wishes to have a shot at redemption.
