The Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49ers were slated to close Week 17 of the NFL season. Before September, this was a game noted by many as one of the headlines of the regular season, but the 49ers' poor form in 2024 made this a game with no implications.

That doesn't mean that there was nothing fun, especially in a battle of offensive minds between Ben Johnson and Kyle Shanahan. And the Lions' offensive coordinator, who has been talked about as the hottest head coach candidate for the next hiring cycle, made sure that fans could have a great game to watch.

The Lions called a lovely play for Jameson Williams, one of the fastest players in the NFL, to receive a lateral pass in a long third down. However, he was able to turn on the jets and run into the end zone, scoring a touchdown that left NFL fans mesmerized:

"God dammit, Ben Johnson is just so electric", said one fan.
"Lions always in their bag for something and that got them 6", another fan said.
"Ben Johnson getting a blank check this offseason", a third fan said.

Detroit is widely known as the most creative team in the league, and it was considered a big surprise when the offensive coordinator decided against taking a head coach job to return to Motor City. The rumors are that, whatever the outcome of the season for Dan Campbell's team, he'll leave after 2024 to pursue a head coach job.

What's the playoff scenario for the Detroit Lions?

The game against the San Francisco 49ers has no real meaning or purpose for Detroit in terms of playoffs. That's because their destiny will be settled in Week 18 against the Minnesota Vikings in the final game of the 2024 regular season.

If they defeat the 49ers, then they'll be 14-2 and will play the Minnesota Vikings, who are also 14-2, for the NFC North title. If they lose today and arrive 13-3 in Week 18, their game against the Vikings will have the same implications; if they defeat Minnesota and both teams finish 14-3, then Campbell's team will win the division in tiebreaker criteria.
