J.J. Watt has officially announced his retirement from the NFL

Arizona Cardinals and former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt announced his retirement at the end of the season this morning via Twitter. The legendary pass rusher intends to call it a day following the end of the 2022 campaign. Here's what he tweeted:

"Koa’s first ever NFL game. My last ever NFL home game. My heart is filled with nothing but love and gratitude. It’s been an absolute honor and a pleasure."

Watt was the Houston Texans' first-round draft pick in 2011. He played with the Texans through to the end of the 2020 season and had one of the best defensive runs as a Texan.

He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2021, signing a two-year, $28 million contract. He intends to play through his contract and walk away from the game at the conclusion of the 2022 campaign.

Fans across the football world congratulated Watt on his excellent career. Many complimented him on being an incredible person, while others said that his next stop will be in Canton, Ohio, in the Hall-of-Fame. Here's how fans reacted to the news:

Could J.J. Watt be a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer?

J.J. Watt will more than likely become a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer. In fact, it would be controversial if he isn't. Watt has an NFL record in most 20+ sack seasons (2) and also seasons leading the league in sacks (2.) He is also a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, Walter Payton Man of the Year, and was named to the 2010's NFL All-Decade team.

He earned five Pro Bowl selections while earning seven All-Pro team selections (five First-Teams) while recording 580 tackles, 115.5 sacks, 69 pass deflections, 27 forced fumbles, and 17 fumble recoveries.

He is arguably the Texans' best defensive player and player in franchise history. His brother, T.J., is amongst the best defensive players in the league as he won last year's Defensive Player of the Year Award with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Another brother and also a Steeler is Derek Watt. Derek plays fullback and is largely touted to be the most complete player of the trio. Perhaps Pittsburgh should utilize the fullback's skillset more going forward. Either way, as one Watt retires, we have two others in the league following in their brother's footsteps.
