Ricky Pearsall has been touted as a potential successor to Brandon Aiyuk, should the one-time All-Pro get his trade wish. However, he has gotten off to an inauspicious start.

On Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers announced that the rookie wide receiver, whom they had drafted 31st overall in April, was heading to the non-football injury list. That means he may not join camp until he is activated, which could happen at any time, but he will still count against the 90-man roster.

Fans rolled their eyes over the development:

"And the injury curse begins," one fan said.

More of it can be seen below:

"We won’t here (sic) from bro for the rest of his career unfortunately," one fan said.
"9ers will surely pay aiyuk 35 mill a year now," another fan said.
"Are we surprised? All those workout vids…and hurt," a fan said.

Ricky Pearsall was proving to be a potential game-changer for 49ers

No one knows exactly how Ricky Pearsall got injured, but what is known is that he was greatly impressing head coach Kyle Shanahan during the 49ers minicamp. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said (via The Athletic's David Lombardi):

"He’s got really good hands so he’s rarely going to have a drop. We’re getting him a lot of reps. He’s getting a lot of different routes, trying all the positions and we’ve been really impressed with how he started off."
"I know Brock (Purdy) doesn’t always get to watch how the route gets there, but he knows when guys end up in the right spot and they catch it. That’s where quarterbacks get comfortable and I think he can feel that with Ricky right away."

With Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and even Jauan Jennings getting priority regarding offensive snaps, it seemed that Ricky Pearsall would start his NFL career as the punt returner, replacing now-Atlanta Falcon Ray Ray McCloud.

Nevertheless, ESPN's Mike Clay had a rather bold prediction for him: 29 receptions for 385 yards and three touchdowns. Jennings, meanwhile, would have just 15 for 196 passing and one touchdown.
