Bill Belichick may be preparing for a return to coaching, but it is not where one would expect it. The former custodian of the New England Patriots reportedly interviewed for the head coaching job at North Carolina – a surprising development given most speculation had centered around his return to the NFL.
Fans had all sorts of reactions.

"I just can’t see him being able to stomach the NIL nonsense," one wrote.
"I’m sure coach will fit right in with college kids," another jokingly posted.
"Wonder if he would take a DC job," another wrote.
Later that day, a source told Jordan Schultz that Belichick was not that serious about entering the collegiate ranks, instead using the UNC interview as leverage to force NFL teams to hasten their decision-making.
Columnist argues that Bill Belichick should remain in the media rather than return to coaching
At least one person will be aghast at this latest Bill Belichick development: Awful Announcing's Michael Grant.
In an opinion piece written before the news of the UNC job interview broke, he explained why the six-time Super Bowl champion should leave coaching behind and commit himself to media, where he has proven to be a completely different person from the gruff frowner that he was as a coach:
"It’s the perfect spot for a 72-year-old future Hall of Famer who wants to remain connected to football. ... Belichick has earned universal applause for his media work. His ability to inform the audience and explain how organizations work is unique. He has been engaging, funny, and a fabulous storyteller."
And this new image has done wonders to change public perception of him:
"Television can polish anyone’s image. Belichick knows that. Without the pressure of having to win, he is free to be relaxed. This revamped Belichick is distinctly more likable, and that makes a huge difference."
Furthermore, Grant argued against continuing to carry an "I'll prove them wrong" mentality – that of proving that he can win a title without Tom Brady. For context, after they split, Belichick went 29-38 with no playoff wins in his last four seasons, including a career-worst 4-13 in 2023. Brady, meanwhile, won his seventh Super Bowl upon becoming a Tampa Bay Buccaneer.
