Following his release from the Kansas City Chiefs, Clyde Edwards-Helaire did not have to wait long to find a new home. The running back signed a short-term deal with the New Orleans Saints' practice squad on Wednesday.
The move is a homecoming for the Louisiana native. The two-time Super Bowl champion was born in Baton Rouge and played college football at Louisiana State University.
Chiefs fans were glad to see the running back get an opportunity to play for the team he grew up rooting for and wished him luck on his new venture on X/Twitter:

Some fans quipped that the only reason the Saints signed him was because he played for Kansas City:
"Man, the Saints sure do love former Chiefs," said @jmgluku.
"They love our players!," remarked @dcoop1211.
"Chiefs love sending our beloved players to a new home in New Orleans. We will always love yall CEH," wrote @ghsquarehead.
New Orleans does seem to have a penchant for signing former Kansas City players immediately after they leave the team. Since 2021, the Saints have signed nine former Chiefs players after their exit from the franchise.
In 2021, they added defensive end Braxton Hoyett to their roster. In 2022, Safeties Daniel Sorensen and Tyrann Mathieu moved to New Orleans after their stints in Kansas City.
In 2023, defensive tackle Khalen Saunders and safety Ugo Amadi joined the Saints after playing for the Chiefs. This year, wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling and linebacker Willie Gay Jr. swapped Missouri for Louisiana. On Wednesday, Edwards-Helaire became the ninth player in three years to join New Orleans after spending time in Kansas City.
Why did the Chiefs release Clyde Edwards-Helaire?
The running back hadn't played a game this season for the Chiefs. The team placed him on the non-football illness list before Week 1 to allow him to deal with his post-traumatic stress disorder.
The Chiefs didn't plan on adding Edwards-Helaire to their active roster for the playoffs. So the franchise opted to cut him to let him sign with a team of his choice and play before he hits free agency in the offseason. The running back expressed his gratitude to Kansas City and its fans with a post on X:
"Love ya KC! A family I didn’t know I needed, y’all made a Kid from Baton Rouge dreams come true! To Chiefs Kingdom , its all love and the support I had in troubling times will forever be unmatched from you guys! With love!"
The Saints likely won't activate him for their Monday Night Football game against the Green Bay Packers. They could add him to the active roster for the season's final two games. However, being on the practice squad keeps the option of joining a contender open. Whether Edwards-Helaire gets any opportunities to play this year remains to be seen.
