The NFL announced that rapper Machine Gun Kelly, or MGK as he is better known, will be headlining the halftime show at the Carolina Panthers vs. New York Giants game which will take place in Munich, Germany on November 10.

However, the irony was not lost on football fans who pointed out that the league has been coming down heavily on players who perform gun celebrations during games. Rodger Goodell wants to make the games more family-friendly and the crackdown is part of that mission.

Then the league decided to select a performer who has "Machine Gun" in his stage name. NFL fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to make all sorts of jokes about the irony of the situation.

One fan said that instead of "hilarious" as the author of the post put it, it would be more appropriate to call the move "stupid."

"Stupid is probably a better word here."

One fan joked that starting from the next season, the league might outlaw shotgun and pistol pre-snap formations because they were gun-related:

"Starting in 2025, pistol and shotgun formations won’t be allowed."
"How long until [they] fine the announcer for referring to a 'shot' downfield?" another fan quipped.
"They only care about having more ways to fine players. NFL security is all armed," another fan said.
"The NFL top brass is a joke. They're going to mess around one day and kill their own game," another fan said that with all the clamping down on harmless actions like celebrations, it might lead to the downfall of the league.
"Ain’t no way. Ain’t no f***** way" one fan responded.

How much has the NFL fined so far this year for gun celebrations?

Entering Week 8, the league has already fined various players 12 times for "violent gestures," totaling a whopping $154,720. While not all of the fines were gun-related, the majority of fines were for players mock-shooting or pretending to wield a gun.

One league executive said that this year there was an "epidemic" of gun celebrations and it needed to be curbed. With many more weeks to go, how much more will the league manage to extract from players in an effort to make the games safer for all viewers?
