Nick Bosa wore a MAGA hat to show his support for Donald Trump in an interview after the 49ers defeated the Cowboys last week. Even though it was Brock Purdy who was being interviewed, the defender slipped into the frame and then said after the game that he thought it was important to speak out at that moment. This incident occurred prior to the 2024 Presidential Election, which saw the Republican nominee win handily.
Now, he has been fined $11,225 for an unauthorized statement. The NFL requires that every player gets permission from the league if they wish to display a personal message on game day. That includes any area that is visible to the stadium, or through broadcast channels, which includes postgame interviews on the field. The rule reads:
"... throughout the period on game-day that a player is visible to the stadium and television audience (including in pregame warm-ups, in the bench area, and during postgame interviews in the locker room or on the field), players are prohibited from wearing, displaying, or otherwise conveying personal messages either in writing or illustration, unless such message has been approved in advance by the League office."
Since Nick Bosa was in contravention of the rule above while sporting a MAGA statement on his hat, he has now been fined accordingly. However, fans were not thrilled by the league's reaction, especially because it came after Donald Trump had already won the election. Here are some reactions on X/Twitter.

Some others complained about Nick Bosa getting a fine for supporting Donald Trump while other messages with political connotations did not land people in trouble. Specific mentions were made of social justice mottos and flags of different countries, which do not fall under the category of a violation of the preceding rule because they are approved by the league.
"Are they going to go back and fine all those for BLM messaging?.. Is that not political?," wondered one.
"But BLM on the backs of helmets is acceptable. Got it," complained another.
"We await the fine count for those who put a knee down and wore BLM paraphernalia... Or the guy who had a Palestinian flag on his shoe... We wait !," vented a third fan.
Nick Bosa and 49ers head to Donald Trump's home state after MAGA fine
Nick Bosa and the 49ers will travel to President-elect Donald Trump's home state of Florida today to face the Buccaneers. Last season both teams made the playoffs but have had an uneven season so far. San Francisco has a 4-4 record and Tampa Bay has a similar 4-5 record.
The Buccaneers came close to defeating the Chiefs for the first time this season last week, after dragging the game into overtime, and will be dangerous opposition. The 49ers themselves are coming off a bye last week, making them well-rested. Both franchises were expected to win their divisions this year but are trailing behind other teams. Each will want to win this game and it should be a fantastic matchup.
