Steve McNair was one of the best quarterbacks of the late 1990s and early 2000s. As one of the faces of the Tennessee Titans, he led the former Houston Oilers to a Super Bowl appearance and three more postseasons afterward. He was also the first black quarterback to win the MVP award, an accolade that he shared with future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning in 2003.
But on Independence Day 2009, what was supposed to be a peaceful and happy retirement ended in tragedy. That day, he was found dead in his condo unit, having been shot dead by his girlfriend who then committed suicide.
The story of the crime is among the three topics that Volume 4 of Netflix's sports docuseries Untold will cover when it premieres on August 20.

Fan reaction to the announcement, however, has been largely negative given the age of the topic and the alleged definitiveness with which the case was solved:
More of the condemnation can be seen below:
"Nasty work," one said.
"Triggered," another said.
"At least the trailer is kind enough to tell us upfront that this will be a huge waste of time," yet another said.
Besides McNair's death, the season will also discuss the 2023 Michigan sign-stealing scandal and the career of US women's soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo.
The circumstances of Steve McNair's death
Someone not accustomed to 2000s football may be asking how Steve McNair met such a tragic fate.
From 1997 until his death, he was married to Mechelle Cartwright and had two sons with her: Tyler and Trenton. He also had two more sons - Steven O'Brian and Stephen Latreal Jr. - from before their marriage.
But by 2009, he was being romantically involved with 20-year-old Sahel Kazemi. At the time of the crime, she had been having financial problems (he had transferred $2,000 to her bank account) and was suspicious that he might be cheating on her.
On July 4, McNair began concluding his night as he had done after leaving football: he put his children to sleep then texted Kazemi and went to sleep on his couch.
She eventually approached him and shot him four times with a 9mm handgun, twice each in the body and head. Then she sat beside his corpse and shot herself in the temple. The cadavers would be found by his friends Wayne Neely and Robert Gaddy.
