The New York Jets have been mostly poor ever since their last AFC Championship Game run in 2010. The arrival of multiple-time MVP Aaron Rodgers in 2023 was supposed to end that misery.

But then he tore his Achilles on his very first drive with the team. And when he returned to the field this season, he largely underperformed, throwing some costly picks and generally failing to empower the offense.

One particular example could be seen in their season finale against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Early in the first quarter, he and Davante Adams attempted a trick play involving a WR-to-QB lateral - only for Jalen Ramsey to end with a brutal hit for a one-yard loss:

There was much anger and mockery in the aftermath:

More of those sentiments can be seen below:

"Was Rodgers trying to end Adams career? I think he was," one wondered.
"This can't be real!!!!" another laughed.
"Pathetic," another jeered.

Dolphins game may be Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams’ last with Jets

Sunday may mark the end of an era, as Aaron Rodgers is now 41 years old with his best days seemingly behind him. Back in November, The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt reported that owner Woody Johnson had wanted to bench him for Tyrod Taylor back in October - while the Jets were still contending for the playoffs - before ultimately being talked out of it by management and the coaches:

"Benching Rodgers, with his pedigree, four games into the season would not sit well with the locker room. The coaches also felt it would embarrass Rodgers."

That ultimately did happen - last week at the Bills, after the multiple-time MVP three two picks during the game. Taylor then threw touchdowns in relief. Shortly after the game, uSTADIUM reported:

"Barring an unforeseen change the Jets are expected to move on from QB Aaron Rodgers and WR Davante Adams this offseason. Source tells us the relationship between owner Woody Johnson and Rodgers is ‘irreparable.’'

Even Rodgers himself admitted that change was coming during his post-game presser:

"I'm just more resigned to the reality of the situation."

And that may also involve releasing his former teammate Adams, who arrived via trade midseason and has caught six passes for 766 yards and two touchdowns in his ten games in Gotham Green.
