NFL fans not sold on Russell Wilson's Steelers debut despite 264-yard night - "He looked awful"

Russell Wilson finally played an actual regular-season game as a Pittsburgh Steeler on Sunday night. His stats looked good - 16 of 29 attempts completed for 264 yards and two touchdowns, one each to wideouts George Pickens and Van Jefferson - as the team routed the New York Jets 37-15 to regain the AFC North lead.

But apparently, some fans are still not buying into the hype:

"As everyone has been waiting for the good dentist stance on this Russell Wilson performance: He looked awful (rust), then fed their best player (as he should). I was wrong counting Russ out but I still firmly believe Fields is a starting level QB in the NFL (based off 6 games)"

"I’m not buying anything from Russ tonight. A lot of lucky bounces for him and he still barely completed 50% of his passes. Steelers D was elite and gave Russ multiple short fields and Jets D will watch the film and be ashamed at their horrendous performance against Russ who was throwing ducks all night," another fan wrote.

One fan was highly critical of Wilson's start, but he still gave him credit.

"The first few drives were diabolical btw. Big ups to him though"

More of the doubt can be seen below:

"I am a Russ fan but the stats are a little overrated vs actual performance," one opined.
"NYG will embarrass him next week," another predicted.
"Not so fast.....it's the Jets," another jeered.

Russell Wilson praises Justin Fields, OC Arthur Smith for helping to prepare him vs. Jets

Of course, this stunning run by the Steelers would have not been possible without Justin Fields, who started the first six games while Russell Wilson was out with a leg injury and went 4-2. After the game, he told NBC Sports' Melissa Stark:

"I also want to give credit to Justin, man. How he got us in this position. What a great player he is. Just this whole team, I really love it. I really love being here."

Both quarterbacks had moved to Pittsburgh during the offseason and were embroiled in one of the hottest quarterback competitions of the preseason. The former Super Bowl champion ultimately got the nod, but he would have to wait for two months before getting his chance.

In that same presser, Wilson also praised offensive coordinator Arthur Smith:

"I thought (he) did a great job. Let me cut it loose and guys getting open and moving around, just makign tremendous plays... He helped me get into a groove."

Next up for Russell Wilson and the Steelers are the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
