Stetson Bennett had a game to remember but a performance to forget as the Rams beat the Cowboys in their first preseason game of 2024. The former Georgia quarterback was starting in place of Matthew Stafford as head coach Sean McVay, as he has consistently done, rested all his starters. Opposite him was Trey Lance for Dallas as each vied to change the narrative around their careers.

But it did not go according to plan for either quarterback. For Trey Lance, the issue was completing drives as he gave up multiple turnovers on downs. For Stetson Bennett, the challenge was keeping the ball safe. He showed good reads of progressions and made some good throws, but seemed to struggle with identifying defenders underneath the secondary.

Four times he was intercepted in the game, stalling drives that he had engineered, which otherwise could have yielded something. Fans on social media were vocal that he needed to go. Here are some of the reactions from posters on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Given his status as a Georgia legend, having won multiple championships with them in college, it was inevitable that those smashing him would make that connection. Here are some more responses from X that made fun of his achievements at varsity-level sports when he was surrounded by the best players at that level, who were consistently better than their opponents.

"this so called Georgia legend is some hot trash"
"Trash ass QBs from Georgia"
"Stetson Bennett when he isn’t surrounded by first team all Americans"

Stetson Bennett finds redemption for Rams against Cowboys

Stetson Bennett had a chance to rebound from his past mistakes during the final two-minute warning and nearly messed it up. He threw a record-breaking fifth interception in a preseason game, only to be spared of that ignominy because of a flag on defensive holding.

And the former Georgia quarterback did not throw the final chance away, in his case quite literally. He took the Rams down the field on a methodical drive down the field and set up near the goalline. After two run plays, one by the running back and one by a quarterback option, that burned through two timeouts, the pressure was firmly on him to come up clutch.

He managed to do that after first missing on a third-and-goal. On his fourth try of the drive, he rolled left to escape pressure and threw a beautiful sidearm touchdown pass with just four seconds left on the clock. The point-after was successful, ensuring a 13-12 win over the Cowboys, who could not respond in the remaining time with a score by their special teams on the ensuing kickoff.

That was the only touchdown of the game and contributed to a thrilling finish. But it also highlighted the fact that as highly touted Stetson Bennett and Trey Lance were in college, they still have a long way to go before they can establish themselves at this level. Based on their preseason looks, neither will be worrying Matthew Stafford or Dak Prescott too much.
