This offseason, the Jacksonville Jaguars acquired New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones. The Jaguars received Jones in return for a 2024 sixth-round pick and declined to pick up his fifth-year option for next season.
With Jones on the trade block this offseason, the Jaguars wanted a more secure backup quarterback behind Trevor Lawrence. During their second preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jones started and showed out.
Jones completed 16-of-23 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns, including a 25-yard TD pass to Parker Washington.

After seeing Jones ball out against the Buccaneers, fans were left impressed with his performance. Some fans think he could be the best quarterback on the Jaguars roster right now even over Trevor Lawrence, who was the number one draft pick in the same class as Jones.
Here's how fans reacted:
"Mac Jones QB1?" one fan questioned.
"Best QB on the jags rn," one person wrote.
Jones was selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Alabama by the Patriots. While he had a good rookie season and was selected as a Pro Bowler, Jones struggled the last two seasons with the Patriots and was benched multiple times.
He has shown flashes of being a good quarterback in the NFL, and tonight's performance reminded some fans.
How's how other fans reacted:
"He might be the best backup in the NFL," one fan said.
"Qb1???" another person questioned.
No matter how good he plays, Mac Jones will serve as Trevor Lawrence's backup
Mac Jones had his fifth-year option declined this offseason while Trevor Lawrence got the richest contract per annual average value in NFL history, signing a five-year, $275 million contract extension ($55 million AAV), including $142 million guaranteed.
Even if Jones has the best preseason ever and looks perfect, Lawrence would still likely start this season as the Jaguars' top quarterback.
Lawrence and Jones were drafted in the same draft class with Lawrence looking like the only franchise quarterback out of himself, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, and Mac Jones. Both Wilson and Jones were traded this offseason with both serving as backups. Lance is a backup in Dallas.
Jones is set to become a free agent after the 2024 season.
