Before the 2024 NFL season began, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker was in the limelight for his commencement speech at the Benedictine College. Fans were upset over Butker's alleged misogynistic comments, while some came to his defense.
While the debate continued for weeks, there was a significant spike in Butker's popularity.
As per various reports, Butker's jersey oversold Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce's jersey. Positive or negative, Butker's controversy certainly had a lasting impact on his merchandise sales.
However, fans had varying opinions about the same. Some were happy about the change, while others were upset that someone like Butker was popular.

Of course, Butker is yet to make any statement on the same.
Teammate Patrick Mahomes reacted to Harrison Butker's viral speech before the 2024 NFL season began
Speaking on LGBTQ+ themes, surrogacy, women's roles and even IVF treatments, many people were upset over Butker's speech. As mentioned, some, though, supported his views.
Of course, everyone from the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes made statements on the matter.
"I've known him for seven years," Mahomes said (via The Athletic's Nate Taylor on X). "I judge him by the character he shows every day and that's a good person. ... We're not always going to agree. He said certain things I don't agree with."
Butker himself has defended his claims, adding that he was not backing out of anything. Making a decision to speak on his faith, Butker added that he did not regret speaking up, and was ready to face the 'shocking' amount of hate he received.
Back on the field for the 2024 campaign, the Chiefs will head into Week 4 with a 3-0 record. They will face the Los Angeles Chargers at the SoFi Stadium on 29 September.
