The Dallas Cowboys are continuing their revamp under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. On Monday, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that the team is set to seal a deal with San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen to handle their special teams, succeeding Nashville-bound John Fassel:

It marks one of the first two significant decisions under the former offensive coordinator, the other being the widely predicted appointment of former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator, succeeding Mike Zimmer.

However, fans were not exactly enthusiastic, instead taking to mockery of it:

More of the negativity can be seen below:

"Jerry Jones has went full blown Al Davis," one fan "wept", referencing the former Raiders owner.
"Dallas special teams going to be laughable," another predicted.
"Niners fans are laughing their a**es off RN," another thought.

Cowboys' plays to be called by new HC Brian Schottenheimer, says Jerry Jones

Besides getting to choose his own coordinators, Brian Schottenheimer will have playcalling duties with the Cowboys. During Monday's introductory press conference, owner/general manager Jerry Jones emphasized that it was one of the main reasons for the intraorganizational promotion:

“We cherish his relationship with our players. I believe, if he doesn’t call the plays, he’s probably not with the Cowboys.”

Jones' son Stephen, who serves as director of player personnel, also implied that predecessor Mike McCarthy stood in the way of the new head coach's ascension:

“Mike was going to call the plays if he were here. Schotty wouldn’t have been here had Mike stayed and called the plays. [Schottenheimer] was ready to go somewhere, and he had opportunities to go call plays [elsewhere].”

As for the schemes that Schottenheimer will be designing, he has plans to "modernize" the playbook - with some influence from one of his former teams:

“I look at some of the things we did in Seattle, but it all things starts with what our players do well. I'm a believer in cut splits, shifts and motions to distort things , marrying our runs and passes and make those things look the same. There's also a tempo element we’re excited to mix in,” Schottenheimer said.

One of the hallmarks of his offense has been hitting wideouts on the go - an approach known as the "Texas Coast" and a deviation from former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore's reliance on hitch and comeback routes.

Tha approach helped the Cowboys rise from 11th to fifth in total yards and also lead the league in total scoring in his 2023 positional debut, which saw them clinch the NFC East at 12-5. However, 2024 saw a regression to 17th and 21st in those respective categories amid a fall to 7-10 and a postseason absence.
