When most NFL head coaches are let go, fans usually get some form of indication that their time is up. When Mike Vrabel and the Tennessee Titans parted ways last summer, the news caught fans by surprise. Considering that the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick also parted ways, the widely held belief was that Vrabel would land with the franchise where he won three Super Bowls in eight years.
Fast forward to 2025, Vrabel is still a free agent. He spent most of 2024 with the Cleveland Browns as a coaching and personnel consultant. His contract expired at the turn of the new year, leaving him free to be interviewed by other NFL teams.
He did not have to wait long to land one. The New York Jets invited Vrabel on Friday to sort out their coaching position for the year.
NFL insider Peter Schrager believes the Jets pulled out all the stops to convince Vrabel to coach the franchise next season.

"The Jets interviewing Vrabel in NJ, with players and staff still there-- and not in Palm Beach (where I imagine other interviews will take place)-- is important, too. Let's him see the facility. Feel the building. Get a taste. All this before interviewing elsewhere," Schrager tweeted on Friday.
The Jets are prepping in New Jersey for their Week 18 showdown against the Miami Dolphins.
What the Jets' HC candidates' pool looks like
Vrabel spent six years with the Tennessee Titans and had a 54-45 record, eventually parting ways with the franchise after a 6-11 campaign in 2023. He led Tennessee to three playoff appearances in six seasons and was also named the NFL's Coach of the Year in 2021.
However, if Vrabel chooses to sign elsewhere, the Jets still have other options. Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn remains a candidate to keep an eye on while Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson will also likely take interviews this cycle.
One dark horse candidate could be Mike McCarthy, whose contract with the Dallas Cowboys is set to expire on Jan. 14.
