The NFL could potentially be changing. There are reportedly quite a few rule changes being mulled over by the league, including an onside kick alternative. Rules change fairly often, but the ones proposed this time are pretty substantial.
One of the biggest potential rule changes would be to do away with the onside kick. When teams desperately need to keep possession after a score, they kick the ball 10 yards and hope they emerge from a mad scramble with the ball.
The XFL introduced an alternative, where the offense tries to convert a fourth and fifteen, which would allow them to keep the ball. According to Mike Florio, this is a rule change that's being considered.
One of the more anticipated conversations centers around the NFL allowing teams to have a third quarterback dressed in case of emergency. In last year's postseason, this was center stage.

The San Francisco 49ers, already missing Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, lost Brock Purdy to an injury in the NFC Championship Game.
They turned to fourth-string Josh Johnson, who also got injured. With a concussion, he had to leave and the 49ers had no other quarterback, so they had to throw an injured Purdy back out there.
This new rule would allow them to have an emergency third quarterback so that this kind of situation doesn't ruin a playoff game or an important matchup.
A proposal was sent out regarding the amount of challenges available in a game to a team, but specific details aren't known. For now, the aforementioned two rule changes are the biggest ones on the table.
Will the NFL actually implement these rule changes?
The question now is whether or not the NFL will implement these rule changes. The three-quarterback rule is pretty likely, since it doesn't come into play all that often and would only improve the quality of the games in which it did.
The onside kick rule is far less likely. It's a pretty radical change and the NFL usually hesitates on those. It's possible since it's been successful in the XFL, but it's still a long shot.
