The Dallas Cowboys knew the offense needed to get help as Dak Prescott only had one option in passing situations at times. Last season, it was Lamb or bust for the Dallas offense, so the front office went to work during the free agency period.
Dallas acquired Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans via a trade to add some firepower to one of the NFL's most explosive offenses of the last few seasons. But the Cowboys aren't done adding offensive talent.
Per CBS Sports' latest NFL mock draft, the Cowboys are adding to their tight end room by taking Notre Dame standout Michael Mayer.

"Mike McCarthy wants to run the dang ball so why not help your offense out twice by grabbing a strong run-blocking tight end who doesn't need to be the focal point of the offense with a stout WR corps on the depth chart."
Adding another tight end does seem like good business for Dallas after Dalton Schultz left via free agency, leaving two rookies in Peyton Hendershot and Jake Ferguson as the next options.
While some suggest that adding to the offensive line in the first round is a better option, with Mayer, Dallas has a capable tight end who is good at run blocking.
With head coach Mike McCarthy wanting to run the ball more, adding another pass-catcher who is equally adept at blocking seems like a no-brainer.
Michael Mayer a good weapon for Dak Prescott?
Looking at Mayer's stats, he can definitely become a useful weapon for Dak Prescott. In back-to-back seasons with Notre Dame, Mayer surpassed 800 receiving yards with seven and nine touchdowns, respectively. That'll work.
Mayer's run blocking will also come in handy for Dak Prescott and the Cowboys' running game. Mike McCarthy has made it known it wants to run the football. Mayer's blocking ability will be a valuable weapon for Dallas as will his threat in the passing game as well.
While some have suggested that Dallas should take Bijan Robinson (doubtful he lasts to pick 26), adding another young tight end to help the Cowboys offense in both the run and pass game would surely be a hit in Frisco.
