NFL teams that never won Super Bowl, ft. Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars

Minnesota Vikings v Buffalo Bills

Winning a Super Bowl in the NFL is the highest honor a team can achieve, and every player enters the season with aspirations of adding the coveted ring to their finger.

The National Football League has been around for over a hundred years, and almost every team has tasted Big Game glory at least once; the keyword 'almost'. Twelve teams have yet to win the Big Game, with these teams having tales of heartbreak to show for their efforts.

The unlucky twelve are the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans.

All these teams have had squads capable of winning the Big Game, but they couldn't cross the hurdle for various reasons. Just look at the Buffalo Bills, who lost four Super Bowl games in a row in the early 1990s; how's that for bad luck?

In the just concluded 2022-23 NFL season, the top five odds of winning the Super Bowl among teams without a ring were: Bengals (+850), Bills (+900), Chargers (+2000), Lions (+2500) and Jaguars (+2500).

Oldest NFL teams without a Super Bowl

So which is the oldest team in the National Football League without having a SB game-winning banner in their stadium? The answer is: Arizona Cardinals, founded in 1920. The Lions (1930) are the second-oldest, followed by the Browns (1950).

It's also important to note that eight NFL franchises have appeared in a Big Game but are yet to win. They are:

  • Buffalo Bills (four appearances)
  • Minnesota Vikings (four)
  • Cincinnati Bengals (three)
  • Atlanta Falcons (two)
  • Carolina Panthers (two)
  • Arizona Cardinals (one)
  • Los Angeles Chargers (one)
  • Tennessee Titans (one)

Which team has lost most Super Bowls?

The Denver Broncos and New England Patriots have lost five SBs each, the most by any team. The Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills are next with four losses.

The Broncos are 3-5 in eight Big Game appearances, while the Patriots are 6-5. All six of the Patriots’ SBs were won by Tom Brady, whose seven all-time wins rank first among quarterbacks in NFL history.

The Tom Brady-led New England Patriots were the paramount franchise of the 2000s, as they appeared in more Big Games than any other team in that period. Tom Brady and his teammates were coached by future Hall of Famer Bill Belichick, a brilliant defensive coaching mind and a coach addicted to winning.

The New England Patriots were the most feared team in the NFL from 2000-2019. They appeared in nine Big Games and won six. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have a long way to go if they wish to replicate or surpass the Pats.
