Tommy DeVito's first game as the New York Giants starting quarterback was off to a poor start on Sunday. DeVito faced immediate pressure and was sacked by Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Calijah Kancey in his opening series at MetLife Stadium.

Giants fans watched in dismay as DeVito stumbled through his early drives. His first quarter stats painted a grim picture: 1-2 for just five yards and a momentum-killing sack. A failed handoff to Wandale Robinson on fourth-and-1 fell inches short, stalling another promising drive.

The Giants (2-8) placed the spotlight on DeVito following Daniel Jones' dramatic release. Baker Mayfield's Buccaneers (4-6) arrived desperate to snap their four-game losing streak. This heightened the stakes for the former Don Bosco standout.

After watching Kancey demolish DeVito's opening drive, fans took to X to share their thoughts.

"Yep we're so tanking no.1 pick here we come!" one fan said.

The brutal sack concerned another fan.

"He's def concussed after that," a fan commented.

As Tommy DeVito struggled to move the chains, comparisons to his predecessor surfaced.

"Daniel jones is not missing this," one fan wrote.

The offensive woes prompted harsh criticism.

"Tommy DeVito sucks. What a joke," another fan wrote.

A resigned Bucs supporter summed up the sentiment.

"Was really hoping the Giants and Tommy DeVito could help us out but that was never gonna happen lol," the fan wrote.

This performance stands in stark contrast to DeVito's earlier success story. In 2023, he sparked a Giants revival with 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns and just three interceptions across nine games. His 3-3 record included a magical three-game win streak.

His first taste of NFL success proved historic. DeVito's five touchdown passes in his first two starts set a team record dating back to 1950. Giants coach Matt LaFleur called him "a hell of a competitor" after a clutch Monday Night Football performance.

That night in December showcased peak DeVito. He led an eight-play, 57-yard drive in the final minutes against Green Bay, going 4-for-4 for 53 yards and orchestrated a walk-off field goal victory.

Saquon Barkley raved about DeVito's presence after that win in 2023.

"The confidence he came in with," Barkley said, via ESPN. "The swagger that he has. I thought it goes a long way."

His swagger turned DeVito into a local celebrity, complete with Italian hand gestures and sandwich shop appearances.

Before today's game, DeVito promised a different approach.

"The external stuff will be on pause," DeVito said on Wednesday. "Want it to stay very tight and make sure everything is about production on Sunday."

However, that production vanished at MetLife Stadium. As the Giants' spiral continues, fans eye a silver lining: their losing streak might secure them a prime draft position.
