Wild Card Weekend will officially kick off on Saturday, starting with the LA Chargers taking on the Houston Texans. One team that will not take the field in the wild-card round is the Kansas City Chiefs, who locked up the No. 1 seed in the AFC with weeks to spare.
The Chiefs put some hurting on the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 29-10 win on Christmas Day and officially became the AFC's top seed, wrapping up a first-round bye and home-field advantage. This was Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid's third time achieving that feat as a quarterback-coach duo. They also clinched their ninth consecutive AFC West title in Week 14 after beating the Chargers.
Interestingly, it appears things went exactly according to Mahomes' plan this year. His Chiefs teammate Justin Watson gave an interview to Fox4 News Kansas City and revealed Mahomes' prediction before the season had started.
“Pretty much as soon as the schedule came out, I remember Patrick coming up to me and saying, hey, early bye, all those games late, that just means we have to clinch on Christmas and we can have all those days until our first playoff game," Watson said.

"Sure enough, it came at the perfect time. Pat was dealing with that ankle injury and I know he was gunning to get that game locked up on Christmas and have a lot of time to heal up and get ready for the playoffs.”
Mahomes, whose future with the franchise is all sorts of secure after winning three Super Bowls and signing a 10-year, $503 million deal, will have plenty of time to put his feet up and take in the action when the NFL playoffs kick off on Saturday.
NFL Playoffs: Road to AFC goes through Patrick Mahomes' Chiefs
The Chiefs rested most of their starters, including Mahomes, in the Week 18 finale in which they lost 38-0 to the Denver Broncos. That loss didn't affect their seeding in any way. Instead, it afforded them a chance to rest up and get healthy for the divisional round of the playoffs.
As things stand, the Chiefs will face one of four teams in the next round - the Steelers, Chargers, Texans or Broncos. We could see a rematch of the Week 18 finale if Denver somehow manages to beat the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. If they do, the Broncos will have to travel to Arrowhead Stadium to take on the Chiefs next weekend.
