The New England Patriots are officially starting their next chapter with Jerod Mayo as the new head coach. For the first time in over two decades, the Patriots will take the field next season with someone other than Bill Belichick coaching the team.
The news of Mayo's hiring comes just about 24 hours after the Patriots announced Belichick had been relieved of his duties. The sudden hire and lack of an extensive coaching search shocked everyone, even if Mayo was already on New England's coaching staff.

When did Jerod Mayo play in the NFL?
Jerod Mayo played his collegiate football career for the Tennessee Volunteers from 2004 until 2007 as a linebacker. He was then drafted by the New England Patriots with the 10th overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. He was named Defensive Rookie of Year after his first pro season.
After two seasons with the Patriots, he was named a Defensive Captain for the team for his leadership on and off the field. He won Super Bowl XLIX with the Patriots and in 2010 was named to the All-Pro Team.
He played eight seasons in the National Football League, all for the New England Patriots, until his retirement in February 2016. In those eight seasons, he had 803 tackles, 11 sacks, eight forced fumbles, seven fumbled recoveries, 19 pass deflections, and three interceptions.
In March 2019, he began his coaching career in the NFL when he was hired by the New England Patriots as the inside linebackers coach. Now, five seasons later, he will become the 15th head coach of the New England Patriots' organization.
