Lamar Jackson could very well be playing for a new team in the 2023 NFL season as his current situation with the Baltimore Ravens has grown complicated.
The two sides failed to agree on a long-term contract extension, prompting the Ravens to use their non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson. This puts his future with the franchise in serious jeopardy.
The non-exclusive franchise tag allows Jackson to negotiate a new contract with other teams, but the Ravens will have the opportunity to match the offer. This gives the team relative control of the player, while allowing them to test their own market.
If they decline to match an offer, the new team can sign Jackson in exchange for sending two first-round picks in the NFL Draft to Baltimore.

Former New England Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty recently appeared on an episode of the "Green Light" podcast with Chris Long, another former NFL player. He explained why he believes the Patriots are the most ideal landing spot for Lamar Jackson in 2023.
He said:
"I'm gonna even say, like a guy like Lamar Jackson, because everyone always sees and always talks about his limitations. And in New England, it's all about, 'Let's play to your strengths."
He added:
"So, I will be very interested. And if Bill really had him, he would be like. 'Hey, let's do this with him, let's do that with him, let's actually go play to his strengths,' which will be pretty cool to see."
McCourty is as familiar with Bill Belichick as anyone, as he spent all 13 seasons of his NFL career in New England. He won three Super Bowl rings during his run, while also serving as a team captain. Belichick has earned a reputation for getting the most out of his players by highlighting their strengths, leading McCourty to believe that Jackson would thrive in their system.
Lamar Jackson can elevate the Patriots to Super Bowl contenders
Mac Jones showed a ton of promise in his rookie year during the 2021 NFL season. He finished as the runner-up for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, while leading the Patriots to the NFL Playoffs.
He significantly regressed in just about every passing category in year two during the 2022 NFL season as the Patriots missed out on the postseason.
Jones' future outlook is now questionable at best. It's completely unclear if he will ever develop into a star quarterback. Lamar Jackson is already a superstar, as well as a former NFL MVP winner and one of the best rushing quarterbacks of all time. His elite skillset could potentially transform the Patriots from playoff hopefuls to Super Bowl contenders in the 2023 NFL season.
