On Sunday, the New Orleans Saints' campaign went from bad to worse as they lost 23-22 to the Carolina Panthers and slipped to the bottom of the NFC South standings. Their season has spiralled into a disaster and perhaps only divine intervention can rescue them. Fortunately, that may inadvertently happen.

Pope Francis' X account often posts about saints and uses a hashtag. However, writing "#Saints" on the social media website automatically adds the New Orleans Saints' crest, thus, accidentally making it look like the account is posting about the franchise.

An example of this is a post from Tuesday, that read:

"The #Saints are precious pearls and are always living and relevant, because they provide a fascinating commentary on the Gospel. Their lives are an illustration of the Good News that Jesus brought to humanity: God is our Father, who loves everyone with boundless love."

NFL fans were amused by the account's insistence on using "#Saints," despite knowing it would draw hilarious replies from people who aren't the post's target audience. Here are some of the funniest comments under the post:

Some Saints fans joked that the post on Pope Francis' X account was a sign that the team's fortunes were about to flip:

"This might turn their season around" - Wrote @cleetus069
"Saints are back" - Believes @JoshRobinson412
"Saints are winning out rest of the season" - Predicted @timecaptales
"New Orleans just got Blessed!" - Claimed @luckylion23

Saints commit to tanking? Team trades CB Marshon Lattimore

While the Saints may have received an unintended blessing from the Pope, it's unlikely to turn their season around and the front office is seemingly aware. Following Sunday's loss to the Panthers, the team fired head coach Dennis Allen and named special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi the interim head coach.

The top brass seemingly have no faith in his ability to turn the tide of their campaign as they traded the four-time Pro Bowler, and arguably their best defensive player, Marshon Lattimore to the Washington Commanders for a third-, fourth- and sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

Their seventh straight loss was evidently the straw that broke the camel's back. Despite trading the veteran cornerback, the Saints are projected to be $61 million over the cap limit.

They have been over the threshold for the past few years and have been kicking the can down the road perpetually. However, it may finally be time to undergo a full rebuild.
