Raiders bench Derek Carr vs 49ers, HC Josh McDaniels opens up on QB situation: “There’s a lot to be sorted through once the season is over”

New England Patriots v Las Vegas Raiders
Las Vegas Raiders' Josh McDaniels and Derek Carr

The Las Vegas Raiders announced on Wednesday that the team will be benching starting quarterback Derek Carr for their Week 17 game against the San Francisco 49ers at the Allegiant Stadium.

Carr had a nightmare outing in the Raiders' 13-10 defeat against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Eve. He completed only 16 of his 30 pass attempts for 174 passing yards with one touchdown pass and three interceptions. It was another rough outing in a tough season for the franchise cornerstone.

Raiders to trade Derek Carr?

On Tuesday, Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels criticized the team's passing game against the Steelers. The loss all but ended Las Vegas' hopes of a playoff appearance. He said:

“That’s not good enough, you know what I mean? And for us to be able to win this time of the year and be productive offensively, you have to throw the ball better than what we’ve thrown it at times here over the last month-in-a-half.”

Today, McDaniels announced that the team will field former New England Patriots quarterback Jarrett Stidham against the 49ers on Sunday and even hinted that the team could trade Carr at the end of the season:

“There’s a lot to be sorted through once the season is over.”

Carr signed a three-year, $121.5 million extension with the Raiders in April. The contract has a no-trade clause, which means the quarterback has the power to choose his next destination. The Raiders quarterback has thrown for 3,522 yards with 24 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions this season. His passer rating of 86.3 is the lowest he's managed since his rookie season in 2014. The time may be right for the team and the quarterback to part ways after nine seasons together.
