Russell Wilson recently reflected on his time with the Denver Broncos and how his tenure with the team developed, ultimately leading to his benching by Sean Payton. The veteran quarterback couldn't make a real impact on the AFC West team and was ultimately traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he's won his first three matchups.
Wilson spoke with ESPN's Hannah Storm about this point in his life and how he navigated through that wave. He admitted he doubted his journey, but used that as fuel to return to the field in the best possible shape.
"I think a big part of it is, is knowing that sometimes the best things in life are unknown.
"I think sometimes the things that are the most rewarding are the spaces and places that people doubt and worry about and, you know, maybe they fear. Sometimes, maybe other people don't believe in it. For you, you know, it's just like my whole football career has been that too, partially, you know, you know, coming into the National Football League, a lot of people thought I couldn't do it," he said. During two seasons with the Broncos, Russell Wilson posted an 11-19 record, failing to make the playoffs in each season. The former Super Bowl champion threw for 6,594 yards, 42 touchdowns and 19 interceptions during those 30 games.
After playing one season under Sean Payton, the head coach decided that Wilson wasn't the right player for his offense and the Broncos are now 5-5 with Bo Nix leading the way.
Meanwhile, Wilson is leading an entertaining Steelers team that looks ready to make some noise after struggling with Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph last campaign.
Former NFL quarterback notes major difference between Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers
Russell Wilson's impact on the Steelers has transcended the gridiron. The quarterback has become a positive leader for this team, helping teammates become better every week he's been there.
So much so that former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason noted that Wilson has been a positive presence for the team, unlike Aaron Rodgers for the Jets.
"And the reason I say that is because Russell Wilson said something about Mike Williams yesterday. And it was being reported during the game that when Mike Williams showed up to Pittsburgh, he showed up with such a big smile — and he was so happy."
The 7-2 Steelers are on a roll right now and Wilson is having a terrific debut season.
