Russell Wilson and Justin Fields were locked into a season-long competition to win over Mike Tomlin going into 2025. With both quarterbacks on expiring deals and the team needing a starting and backup quarterback, both could technically remain with the team in 2025.
However, one former head coach doesn't see it that way. Speaking on Wednesday's edition of "Get Up," NFL analyst and former Colts head coach Jeff Saturday was asked if he was convinced that Wilson deserved another shot. However, in how he answered the question, he expressed a belief that the Steelers would have to choose between Wilson and Fields.
"I am convinced. I am convinced of this," Saturday said. "And part of the reason why I am convinced it's just who's going to be out there and who are you going to go upgrade to and what does this look like? I'm on the fence with Fields and Wilson, which one I would probably keep." [06:52:07:07]

After both quarterbacks showed they could win games this season, both arguably have a case. Coach Mike Tomlin would most likely have a big say in who stays and who goes, but the general manager has the final say in creating the urgency for the choice in the first place.
Exploring potential Justin Fields landing spots
The Steelers benched Justin Field in favor of Rusell Wilson after starting 4-2. At this point, It's uncertain whether Fields will land a starting job from free agency.
Fields might work as a mentor and someone who could compete with an incoming Jets rookie quarterback in 2025 if Aaron Rodgers is removed. Fields also could end up in a similar situation in the AFC West with the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Titans also could have some interest if they elect to completely overhaul their quarterback room this offseason thanks to their number one overall draft pick. Fields could work as a bridge quarterback, giving time to Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward to settle in.
