The Dallas Cowboys and Mike McCarthy officially parted ways on Monday, adding another candidate to the current pool of head coaching candidates. While the Cowboys will too start their search for a head coach, McCarthy is expected to be interviewed by other teams.

McCarthy won't be able to officially speak to other NFL teams until after midnight on Tuesday as his contract will Dallas will officially expire at that time. The New Orleans Saints are also expected to request an interview with the former Super Bowl-winning head coach.

NFL fans on X flooded the comments section. Most weren't happy with the thought of McCarthy being in consideration. Some already had another name in mind for their head coach.

The fans' comments continued as many didn't feel Mike McCarthy was a good fit for the current status of the New Orleans Saints, which could be a rebuild in the future.

"As someone who has no expectations that the next coach will make it 3 years, this would be a disappointing hire."-one fan on X said
"Well, the dream of Derek Carr getting cut is basically over if they hire McCarthy, but mostly because Loomis has a crush on him."-another fan predicted
"It would be a bad decision. He shouldn't be in a rebuild situation."-said another

One fan went as far as to say that Mike McCarthy only found success with the Green Bay Packers when Aaron Rodgers was at his prime. By the way the replies on the post on X continued, it's safe to say many New Orleans Saints won't be happy if Mike McCarthy does in fact get hired.

"I understand the Saints interest in him but why would he be interested in this job?"-one person questioned
"For an interview. Not hired."-said one
"DO NOT HIRE MCCARTHY!! Dude had Aaron Rodgers in his prime, with a totally loaded roster and won one SB…plus he was the genius that wanted to trade for Aaron Brooks!!"-said another why reviewing the coach's history

Troy Aikman criticized Dallas Cowboys for Mike McCarthy's release

The Dallas Cowboys won the NFC East in 2023 and then proceeded to lose to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round. In 2024, the team's struggles were emphasized with the loss of quarterback Dak Prescott in Week 9.

Mike McCarthy's contract was due to expire at the end of the season and whether he would return became a question. Last week, the Chicago Bears requested an interview with McCarthy but, the Cowboys denied the request, which they could do as he was still under contract.

On Monday night, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and Super Bowl champion, Troy Aikman, criticized his former team for not having a plan on how they will move forward.

"I thought Mike McCarthy would be the head coach, so this is a bit of a surprise for me today that he’s not going to be. What went into those conversations that [Adam] Schefter talked about, I'm not really sure, but it suggests that there's not a real plan," Aikman said on ESPN's Monday Night Football.

It's unknown what direction the Cowboys will go regarding a new head coach. Whether it will be a first-time head coach or a veteran remains to be seen.
