Saints fans want Derek Carr benched for Spencer Rattler as rookie QB shines in preseason: "Start him now," "I've seen enough"

Saints fans are done with Derek Carr and want Spencer Rattler to take over after the latter acquitted himself better than the veteran in their preseason game in 2024 against the Arizona Cardinals.

The former Raiders quarterback was supposed to be an upgrade when he arrived in New Orleans but struggled last year and failed to take the team to the playoffs. So, he was already on a short leash and his latest game performance has left a lot to be desired.

Derek Carr's very first pass was nearly an interception. However, rather than recovering from the reprieve and taking the game by the scruff of the neck, he failed to make a notable contribution. He completed just two passes in six attempts for a total of 12 yards.

For a fanbase that saw the brilliance of Drew Brees season after season, this is a major comedown. And they were ready to move on from their presumptive starter and give rookie Spencer Rattler a chance if social media is any indicator. Fans frustrated with Derek Carr were happy to see Spencer Rattler extend play with his legs and offer a respite from what they are used to seeing. But that does not mean that the rookie is ready to take over the reins just yet.

Even in a preseason game where the defensive coordinators are not showing their hands and the starters are not playing at full pelt, Spencer Rattler objectively struggled. He completed nine of his 17 attempts for 70 yards. He did not throw a touchdown pass and ended up with a passer rating of 63.4.

While it was better than Derek Carr, that performance alone does not scream a starter in the NFL. Preseason is never too determinative of how a team does in the regular season or postseason, but based on just the optics, the Saints fans could be in for a long season.

Perhaps, they should have done what their divisional rivals, the Atlanta Falcons, did. Despite having Kirk Cousins, they drafted Michael Penix Jr. to have two potentially elite options at the top of the depth chart and got rid of Desmond Ridder in the offseason. New Orleans does not look as if it has such choices as it enters the 2024 season.
