“Same way they got Baker Mayfield” – Stetson Bennett’s arrest details has NFL fans crying conspiracy theory

As new details about Stetson Bennett
As new details about Stetson Bennett's arrest were released, fans gave their take on the entire situation, even comparing him to Baker Mayfield.

New details have emerged about the arrest of former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett. Just weeks after leading Georgia to its second consecutive national championship, the NFL hopeful was arrested by police in Dallas in January for public intoxication.

In a video released after the incident, he appeared to run from the police and was quickly tackled to the ground.

The incident report was obtained by the Athens Banner-Herald and released on Wednesday. It appears that police received calls about a man knocking on doors. When they eventually found him, he was hiding behind a brick wall in an apartment complex.

He refused to come out from behind the wall and then told police that he was visiting a friend. He then couldn't tell them the friend's name or address and said that he wasn't in possession of a cell phone. Police later arrested him for public intoxication.

After the report was released, those on Twitter had their own opinions and takes on the situation. With some saying that it reminded them of Baker Mayfield's arrest back in 2017. He too was found hiding from police and was eventually arrested for public intoxication.

Others joked that the brick wall that he was hiding behind was Georgia's offensive line. Another said that he had 'good pocket presence' and that perhaps this may be considered a character issue, a term commonly used with draft prospects.

Will QB Stetson Bennett get drafted?

Stetson Bennett and the Georgia Bulldogs have won the national championship the past two seasons. The former walk-on quarterback was even a finalist for the Heisman Trophy award this past year. But as the NFL Combines commences this week, the quarterback who will compete in front of scouts isn't at the top of the draft boards.

This was the case even before his run-in with the police in January. Age is one of the reasons why NFL scouts have some doubts. At 25 years old, he will be an older rookie and as athletes age, their production can decrease, meaning a team may not see an upside to using a draft pick for a possible short-term tenure. His arm strength and size also, he's listed at 5-foot-11, causing some concern for NFL scouts.

ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr.'s recent mock draft has Bennett as being drafted in the later rounds of the 2023 NFL Draft. Likely a third-day draft pick, while that may not be a starting job out of the gates, there's always a chance down the road.
